Makoko Community Project

Our first project was a new school for children under 10 in the Makoko Community in Lagos. In addition to the long-lasting impact of the economic recession in 2007, existing schools severely lack basic educational supplies like school uniforms, stationery, and classroom equipment.

About the project

Starting point

The first step to understanding the scope of the project was to learn what shaped a child's learning experience in the Makoko community and to find out how we could improve.

Support from local communities

Location, scale, and accessibility were crucial to this project. We wanted to make the biggest but most realistic impact on Makoko's educational landscape. With the help of the Baale and local chiefs, we were able to complete the project

End result

Contextualising the needs of Makoko Community schoolchildren, their parents, and their educators helped us to construct a well-equipped, bright, and accessible place of learning. The project was executed between 2007 and 2009. We were able to provide school uniforms for all pupils, stationery, and classroom equipements
